We must stop the cruel treatment of children in our custody.
My plan before Congress:
- End family separations, except in the most extreme cases where a child is in immediate danger.
- Ensure health and safety standards for detained children, including access to food, medical care, and hygiene products.
- Make it easier to place children, temporarily, with sponsors to get them out of our detention camps. Get them into family settings and out of prisons.
- Make sure legal counsel is available to all unaccompanied children.
- Ramp up public oversight of facilities where children are being kept. Shine a light on any atrocities being committed.
This must happen right now. Each day we wait is another day children suffer on our watch.
