Meet Jeff Merkley

Photo of Jeff MerkleyOregon's Senator Jeff Merkley has dedicated his life to public service. His entire career, from running non-profits to the U.S. Senate, has been animated by a simple philosophy: that each of us has a responsibility to make the community, the nation, and the planet a better place. In our nation’s battle to deliver on a “We the People” vision in the face of a privileged and powerful class working to rig our economy and democracy, Jeff is always fighting for working Americans, because he comes from working America.

As the son of a union mechanic and first in his family to go to college, Jeff’s always been focused on giving working Americans a chance to get ahead. He’s taken on payday lenders, banned predatory mortgages, and led the effort after the 2008 crisis to block banks from gambling with taxpayer-insured deposits.

Jeff is a champion for equal rights. He introduced the Equality Act, landmark legislation that would extend full non-discrimination protections to LGBTQ Americans in the workplace, housing, public accommodations and more. He has been an outspoken defender of Planned Parenthood, championed equal pay legislation, and wrote a provision ensuring that breastfeeding moms get the privacy and time to pump at work.

Jeff sees the threat of climate chaos as a defining challenge of our generation. In 2015, Jeff introduced the Keep It in the Ground Act to end new oil, gas and coal leases on federal lands and waters. In 2017, Jeff introduced the visionary 100 by ‘50 Act, which lays out a roadmap of to transition the country to 100% clean and renewable energy by 2050.

Jeff has been driven by a belief that we need to take on the most important fights, even when the opponents are powerful or the odds are long. That’s why he worked to reduce the threat of nuclear war early in his career, why he launched an improbable campaign to upset a popular sitting Senator, why he spoke for nearly 15-1/2 hours on the Senate floor in opposition to the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to fill a stolen Supreme Court seat, and why he went to the border to expose Donald Trump's cruel child-snatching policy, force the Administration to halt separations, and hold them accountable for reuniting families as fast as possible.

Jeff and his wife, Mary, a nurse, have two children, Jonathan and Brynne, and an Airedale terrier, Sadie.
