We must end the cruel treatment of children at our borders. My plan:
Food. Diapers. Toothbrushes. You know, the basics.
Children separated from their families by Donald Trump, children jailed by our government, aren't even guaranteed that.
This isn't complicated: We must stop the cruel treatment of children in our custody.
My plan before Congress:
End family separations, except in the most extreme cases where a child is in immediate danger.
Ensure health and safety standards for detained children, including access to food, medical care, and hygiene products.
Make it easier to place children, temporarily, with sponsors to get them out of our detention camps. Get them into family settings and out of prisons.
Make sure legal counsel is available to all unaccompanied children.
Ramp up public oversight of facilities where children are being kept. Shine a light on any atrocities being committed.
This must happen right now. Each day we wait is another day children suffer on our watch.
