Climate chaos is making our wildfire seasons longer, hotter, and smokier
Climate chaos is making our wildfire seasons longer, hotter, and smokier.
When that smoke blankets our towns, it's a public health emergency. Kids with asthma can't go outside, seniors struggle to breathe, outdoor workers have nowhere safe to go, and too many communities are left to fend for themselves against hazardous plumes with none of the resources they need to fight back.
I introduced the Wildfire Smoke Emergency Declaration Act to change that.
This bill unlocks federal resources so communities don't have to face these hazardous conditions alone. It makes assistance available through FEMA to help establish smoke shelters and monitor air quality, and it allows the Small Business Administration to provide grants to small businesses that lose revenue due to smoke.
Oregonians deserve better than another season of closed windows and canceled plans. They deserve a government that treats wildfire smoke like the health emergency it is.

Onward!
