Trump's primetime address last week was his latest effort to undermine November's elections. This is a five-alarm fire, yet another escalation in his months-long campaign to challenge, create doubt in, and lay the groundwork to control November's midterm elections.
In last week's speech from the White House, the kind of moment usually reserved for serious national business, Trump dredged up the same tired, debunked claims about the 2020 election he's been peddling for six years.
Let's be clear about why: Trump knows what's coming in November. He knows Americans are furious about the cost of living, the chaos, and the corruption of his second term. So instead of fixing any of it, he's doing what he always does: attacking the legitimacy of elections before a single vote is even cast.
This is the same playbook Trump has used for months to push the SAVE Act, the voter suppression bill Trump has been holding Congress hostage over, that would make it harder for millions of eligible citizens, especially married women, students, and elderly voters without easy access to specific documents, to vote.
Trump is trying to rig the rules, sow doubt, and make people believe voting doesn't matter, or that their vote won't count, or that the whole system is broken, so they don't bother showing up.
We can't let him win that fight before November even gets here.
