I’m working to ban AI in our elections
In our democracy, I'm committed to one simple idea: every eligible voter deserves to have their voice heard. Right now, that idea is under threat from all directions, with Trump ramping up attacks on vote by mail, and state legislatures across the country attempting to prevent citizens from voting by enacting burdensome voter ID laws. And there's the threat from a 21st-century tool nobody saw coming when our election laws were written — artificial intelligence.
Bad actors are already using AI to file mass, baseless challenges against voters' registrations, scraping public data to manufacture doubt about who's eligible to vote. And at the same time, the Trump Administration has pushed at least 25 states to hand over their voter rolls so the federal government can run them through a Department of Homeland Security database that was never built to determine voter eligibility and is full of errors.
Put those two things together, and you get a system where American citizens can get confused, flagged, challenged, and quietly pushed off the rolls even though they are eligible to vote.
Senator Padilla and I reintroduced the FAIR Elections Act to shut this down before it costs people their vote.
The ballot box is the beating heart of democracy, and we must use every tool at our disposal to protect it.
