Republicans aren’t backing down from passing the SAVE Act
Republicans aren't backing down from passing the SAVE Act, and we must not back down from blocking it!
They're already looking for new ways to pass it — including using budget reconciliation to jam it through with a simple majority vote.
Let's be clear about what this bill really does.
Trump and Republicans claim it's about stopping NON-CITIZENS from voting. That's simply not true.
It's about making it hard for millions of CITIZENS to vote — the citizens the Republicans want to stop from voting in order to rig the November election!
Hard for women who've changed their last names.
Hard for students and Tribal members who couldn't use their standard IDs to vote.
Hard for city dwellers who would have to vote at polling places where the Republicans could slow down voting to create long lines and cause citizens to give up.
Hard for working people who don't have easy access to documents like passports or birth certificates.
And if you're purged from the voter rolls by the Trump administration? You might not get re-registered in time. The process is complicated, expensive, and in many cases, unrealistic.
This bill is blatant voter suppression, and it's part of Trump's broader MAGA strategy we've seen before: change the rules, create confusion, and make it harder for certain Americans to participate in our democracy.
I've been fighting the SAVE Act in the Senate, and I'm preparing for the next phase of this battle if Republicans try to pass this bill through reconciliation.
The right to vote is fundamental. It is the beating heart of our democracy. And I will not stand by while Trump and Republicans try to rig the system to hold onto power.
Onward!
