Donald Trump's escalating war in Iran is reckless, unlawful, and already hitting Americans here at home.
His recent threat to attack Iran's civilian infrastructure — power plants, bridges — is the words of a frustrated and immoral madman. Many experts agree that targeting civilian infrastructure would constitute war crimes under international law.
Our servicemembers and military leaders swear an oath to the Constitution and the law. They are legally required to refuse unlawful orders, including any directive to commit war crimes.
But this war of choice isn't just playing out overseas and in the lives of service members and their families — it's showing up in most Oregonians' daily lives.
Higher fuel costs. Higher grocery bills. And now, even higher shipping costs. The U.S. Postal Service has announced its first-ever surcharge on packages — an 8% increase — driven by rising fuel prices tied to this conflict.
That means paying more at the pump. Paying more at the store. Paying more for everyday essentials.
Trump promised to lower costs and end wars. Instead, he's delivering the opposite: higher prices and a dangerous new conflict. This is what happens when reckless decisions are made without accountability.
We need to reassert the role of Congress, restore responsible leadership, and put the needs of American families ahead of impulsive, dangerous actions.
Onward,
Jeff
