The SAVE Act

Republicans kept the Senate in Washington this weekend to try to force through a bill called the "SAVE Act."

They claim it is designed to stop NON-CITIZENS from voting.

But that is BS.

The goal is to stop CITIZENS from voting.

The bill requires every state to hand over its voting registration list to Trump. Then, Trump and his team are allowed to purge the list of people they think might not be qualified to vote.

For example, 69 million women whose married name is different from their birth certificate would be purged off the list.

So would 4 million men who have changed their last name.

And Trump could purge them just before the November election, giving them little time to follow the very strict rules for re-registering.

You can't even re-register using your birth certificate alone. You need to have an additional "permitted" identification.

You can re-register with a passport, but it takes $165 and six months to acquire one if you don't have one already. Not only could you not get the passport in time, but the cost makes it a poll tax.

And that's not all.

Student IDs and Tribal IDs could not be used to vote, even after you've gone through the rigorous re-registration process...even if your ID is backed up by your matching signature!

The bill is designed to create hurdles for four groups to vote: women, students, Tribal members, and the less affluent.

Citizens who have moved often — and don't have files handy with a birth certificate — are in a real bind.

And the bill effectively bans vote-by-mail. This submits citizens to all kinds of election corruption if they vote on Election Day: changing the location of precinct voting officers; giving out misinformation about the date and the location for voting; putting in staff or machines that work slowly and create long wait times; and putting polling places where there is little parking, which could make it hard for seniors or folks who have mobility issues.

In short, the SAVE Act is all about rigging the November election and enabling Trump to entrench an authoritarian government that tosses aside all the checks and balances and divisions of power of our Constitution.

We must stop this authoritarian bill.

I'm a HELL NO on the SAVE Act. The right to vote is fundamental, and I will not stand by while politicians try to rig the rules to hold onto power.

Let's save our republic!
