I’ve been fighting for years to push Wall Street out of the housing market

Houses in our neighborhoods should be homes for people, not a cash cow for hedge funds.

Across the country, including right here in Oregon, hedge funds are wielding their financial muscle to gobble up available housing, outbid hard-working Americans who have sacrificed to save up downpayments, drive up home prices and rents, and turn neighborhoods into Wall Street profit centers at the expense of folks struggling to find a place to call home.

I've been fighting for years to push Wall Street out of the housing market, and I'm ready to work with anyone — Republican or Democrat — to get it done.

Here are three ways I'm taking concrete action to lower housing costs and expand homeownership:

First, I've updated my HOPE for Homeownership Act and built bipartisan support behind it. This legislation would curb hedge funds' grip on our housing supply and ensure that homes in our communities are places for families to live — not assets for Wall Street speculation.

Second, I'm partnering with Republican Senator Josh Hawley to address this crisis from an antitrust perspective. When a single corporate entity owns too much housing in a community, families lose real choices. Competition matters — especially when it comes to something as fundamental as a place to live.

Third, I'm working with Senator Elizabeth Warren to end special tax breaks for the billionaire corporations buying up homes in our neighborhoods and reinvest those dollars into building more housing and lowering costs.

Everyone should have a safe, affordable place to call home, and I'm working to get it done.
