We cannot stumble into another war

Donald Trump's decision to launch strikes against Iran was reckless, and it carries profound consequences for our country and for the lives of our service members.

The power to declare war belongs to Congress — not to the President. The Constitution is clear on that responsibility. Yet Donald Trump has acknowledged launching military strikes that amount to an act of war, without Congressional authorization.

Trump's actions risk dragging our nation into another endless conflict in the Middle East. And we know where this leads: thousands of lives in danger and billions of dollars at risk of being squandered.

Congress must immediately debate and vote on a War Powers Resolution to rein in this reckless escalation. Or, better yet, Congress should debate an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), which is the process that should take place before hostilities begin.

Decisions about war and peace cannot rest in the hands of one person. They require debate, accountability to, and the consent of the American people through their elected representatives.

My heart is with the loved ones of the American service members who have been killed or injured in action. Their sacrifice is a profound loss and a painful reminder that our troops pay the steepest price for decisions made in Washington.

We cannot stumble into another war. We must follow the Constitution. We must demand accountability. And we must say clearly: No war with Iran.

Onward,

Jeff
