The Trump administration has just launched a sweeping review of federal funding sent to Democratic-led states, including Oregon. This is political retribution from Trump and his crony Russ Vought, and it's a blatant and dangerous abuse of power.
This so-called "review" targets 14 blue states and Washington, DC — all places that voted against Trump. It jeopardizes funding for schools, child care, health care, food assistance, colleges, nonprofits, and local governments. Trump is using federal dollars as a political weapon to punish states he doesn't like.
Trump does not care how many people he hurts to score cheap political points. Freezing or threatening funding for child care, food assistance, and community programs hurts working families, seniors, and kids. Courts have already stepped in to stop some of this damage, but we cannot rely on judges alone to protect our democracy.
This is exactly why control of the Senate matters. With a Democratic Senate Majority, we can block Trump's worst abuses, conduct real oversight, and defend Oregon and other states from this kind of authoritarian power grab. Without it, he and his allies will keep pushing the limits of what they can get away with.
