What happened in Minneapolis and Portland

This week, a woman named Renee Nicole Good was killed during an ICE operation in Minneapolis. That loss of life is unspeakable. Any time federal law enforcement actions result in a civilian death, the American people deserve clear answers, transparency, and accountability.

Instead, the Trump administration has responded by denying reality and blocking access to evidence in the investigation — telling the public not to believe eyewitness accounts, video evidence, or the concerns of the community.

And just one day after Renee Good was gunned down in Minneapolis, federal agents shot two more people — this time in Portland, in my own neighborhood. I am furious.

I am praying for their recovery, and my heart goes out to their families, who have been plunged into pain and uncertainty.

Masked federal agents operating in our communities without clear identification, accountability, or transparency create fear — and lead to harmful and deadly outcomes. ICE has been terrorizing communities at the behest of an authoritarian strongman, and they have done nothing to make our communities safer.

History has a word for this kind of government behavior: fascism.

We need full transparency about what happened, including the roles of both ICE and CBP, and full accountability through an independent investigation with local and state participation. There is no reason to trust statements coming from the Department of Homeland Security when it has repeatedly misled the American people.

That's why I am demanding accountability for the killing of Renee Good, for the shootings in Portland, and for ICE's dangerous enforcement operations more broadly. I will continue fighting to get ICE out of our communities and to pass my legislation requiring all federal law enforcement officers to clearly display identification at all times.

No one should fear disappearing into an unmarked vehicle. No family should be left without answers. ICE must end these dangerous operations in Oregon now.

I will keep standing up for the truth, for accountability, and for the fundamental principle that the rule of law applies to everyone — including the federal government itself.

Onward,

Jeff
