Donald Trump just unveiled his latest attack on democracy: he wants to eliminate Vote by Mail by executive order.
Let's be clear: Vote by Mail is safe, trusted, and used successfully by millions of Americans — including here in Oregon, where we've been voting exclusively by mail for more than 20 years. Because of it, we consistently have some of the highest voter turnout rates in the nation. That's what happens when you make voting accessible and secure. Vote by Mail leaves a paper trail, prevents long lines at polling places, and ensures that every eligible voter can have their say.
Donald Trump and Republicans want to turn back the clock and make it harder to vote and harder to be heard.
Trump wants everyone to have to vote on election day because it is very easy to suppress the vote in targeted precincts and manipulate the outcome on election day. Reducing the number of polling places, constantly moving their locations, putting them in areas with little parking, understaffing them, or using faulty machines all create long lines, so fewer people can wait to vote. This kind of Election Day suppression is common in many parts of the country and deeply undermines our democracy.
But we won't let them strip Americans of this freedom.
That's why I've championed legislation to safeguard and expand access to the ballot box, strengthen election security, and make Vote by Mail the law of the land. Voting is a right, not a privilege, and it should be accessible and easy for every American, no matter your zip code.
Egged on by Trump, Republicans across the country are ramping up voter suppression tactics to silence our voices, block participation, and make it harder to hold them accountable. Democracy only exists when every eligible voter can cast a ballot and have their vote counted, and Vote by Mail is one of the best tools we have to make that happen.
Vote by Mail isn't a partisan issue. It's a democracy issue. It's about whether power belongs to the people or to politicians who want to silence them. The ballot box is the beating heart of our democracy, and we must do everything we can to make sure all Americans can have their voices heard.
