Citizens United

Citizens United is a scourge on our democracy, and today is the 14th anniversary of the disastrous Supreme Court ruling that broke open the floodgates for dark money – sending a deluge of anonymous campaign cash from big corporations and unaccountable billionaires crashing into our political process.

The millions and millions of dollars in dark money super PACs are spewing into our elections swamp the airwaves with disinformation and impact outcomes. Every person has a right to use their voice in the democratic process – that's the beauty of the First Amendment. But corporations are not people.

My colleagues and I are elected to work for "We the People," but with right-wing billionaires corrupting the Supreme Court, members of Congress trading stocks giving the appearance of conflicts of interest, and corporate polluters funneling dark money into Super PACs to manipulate our electoral system, the people's voice is being drowned out.

We need to end these practices right now, and that's why I'm championing key bills like the DISCLOSE Act to put a stop to the anti-democratic forces targeting our right to free and fair elections.

The DISCLOSE Act would end the influence of dark money, shine a bright light of transparency on political spending, and make our government more accountable to voters.

Dark money allows donors with special interests to hide their identities, making it impossible for Americans to know who is behind the massive flow of money to influence our elections and what motivates them.

A healthy democracy can only function when peoples' voices are heard. It's long past time for Congress to pass this bill and stop billionaires with right-wing agendas from secretly buying our elections with dark money smear campaigns.
