Why hide it?

Dark money. No one knows who is behind it or where it came from. And there are no limits on how much a billionaire or a corporation can spend influencing our elections.

This is a major problem for our democracy.

Since the disastrous Citizens United decision, there has been billions of dollars in dark money flowing in our elections and corrupting our political system.

Each election, billionaires and corporate special interests dump gobs of money into super PACs with innocuous-sounding names. In truth, these super PACs are the mechanism by which the uber-wealthy buy elections.

But for people like you and me, if we donate $200 to a campaign, that money is disclosed. But if a Wall Street billionaire or corporation spends five or ten million in support of a campaign, they don't have to disclose the contribution. It's absurd.

That's why I've joined my good friend Senator Whitehouse in working to pass the DISCLOSE Act and finally shine a bright light on the dark money in our political process. We just held a hearing on the DISCLOSE ACT recently in the Senate, and it's my hope we can get it to the floor for a vote soon.

The DISCLOSE Act will require billionaires and corporations to disclose their massive campaign contributions so that the American people know where the money is coming from and the motivation behind it.

For years, I've been fighting to restore election integrity to make sure Americans have full access to the ballot box. But election integrity also means that the American people know where all the campaign spending is coming from.

Dark money is a plague on our politics and a great way to cure it is to pass the DISCLOSE Act.
