Today’s vote to guarantee abortion rights nationwide

Today, the United States Senate will vote on a bill to guarantee abortion rights nationwide.

I will vote yes.

After all, the right to bodily autonomy – the right to decide whether and when to bear a child – is one of the most fundamental rights we have.

But I will be honest with you: It is unlikely that we are going to succeed. We expect that Senate Republicans will stand lockstep behind a filibuster of this important law.

Though we are not likely to succeed today, we are taking this vote because the American people deserve to know where every Senator stands. Who supports abortion rights and who does not; who will use the filibuster to stop an up-or-down vote, and who is willing to debate and vote on this important bill.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The current secret, silent filibuster – effectively a veto for the party with fewer senators – is archaic and anti-democratic. It is rooted in racism and it will be used today to deny basic human rights to millions of people.

After seeing the leaked Supreme Court decision last week, I am beyond frustrated and angry. And I know you are, too.

We must stand united and declare with one voice that we will not allow our rights to be taken away by MAGA politicians and extremist judges.

We will work every day, organize every day, and fight every day.

The right to abortion is the right to bodily autonomy. The right to bodily autonomy is a basic human right. We will not give up this fight.
