What Trump is doing when we're not watching

Do you remember the early days of the Trump administration? It seemed like every Friday afternoon, right about 5 or 6 p.m. eastern, his White House would make some outrageous announcement—hoping the news would get lost over the weekend.

Well, right now, because of the wall-to-wall coverage of Covid-19, every day is a Friday. The Trump administration hasn't stopped, not for one minute, in their attempts to sneak things past the American people.

Let's just review the past few weeks:

• On April 3, Trump fired the intelligence community inspector general who informed Congress that there was a whistleblower who wanted us to know how Trump pressured Ukraine to interfere in our election.

• The Trump administration is racing to gut environmental protections—rolling back clean air rules, ending protections for migratory birds, opening public lands to oil and gas drilling, even hiding scientific studies from the public.

• His attacks on immigrants continue unabated, including forcing unaccompanied children to face deportation hearings, even in New York in the heart of the pandemic.

• They're even still fighting to overturn the Affordable Care Act in court, in the middle of the greatest health care crisis our nation has ever faced.

• And of course, Trump continues to nominate federal judges—all ideological conservatives, and many unqualified.

I'm spending most of my time working on the pandemic and our efforts to help Americans get through this crisis and forge an economic recovery. That's where our focus should be - it's where the president's focus should be.

But the very fact that Trump is continuing to undermine our health, our checks and balances, our economic opportunities, and our basic values in the middle of a pandemic is exactly why we have to keep fighting for a President and Senate who will put the American people first.
