For Jeff's birthday, support the charities at the border

by Mary Sorteberg

I remember the day when Jeff told me he was going to go down to the border to investigate what was happening with the children that he had heard were being caged by our government.

Having been married to Jeff for 27 years, I was not surprised for a minute with his decision. We didn't know what to expect from his visit, but as Jeff said that day, "If it's true, we have to do something."

You remember what happened: He became the first senator to see children in cages at a border processing station. He went to a huge former WalMart warehousing kids and demanded to be let in. They refused. They even called the local police on him. And then, America woke up. We all learned what was happening to those children. What our own government—led by our callous president—is doing to those children.

This fight isn't over. Every single day, there are brave people who are fighting to release the children, protect their rights, support the families seeking to reconnect with loved ones.

Today is Jeff's birthday. I know that it would mean so much to him if you would donate a few dollars to the charities fighting for those children at the border.

Your donation will make a critical difference to these nonprofit organizations at the front lines of the struggle. Your donation will help these children.

With gratitude,

Mary
