Not. In. Our. Names.
One year ago, I saw the horrors of Donald Trump's child imprisonment and family separation policies with my own eyes.
I tried to get access to the facility where children were being jailed. The cops were called on me.
That didn't deter our movement. We shined a light on the cruelties happening in our names, at our borders.
One reason this has been allowed to happen? A compliant U.S. Senate that refuses to challenge Trump on his atrocities.
Here's what I wrote one year ago:
Donald Trump has implemented a horrific child-snatching policy. He has instructed immigration agents to rip children from the arms of their parents. These are families who are fleeing to America because their lives are at risk at home.
I wish I could tell you today that this battle was over, that we've won, that every family is reunited and that every child is free and out of jail.
But, we've made a big dent in their plans: the nation is now in an uproar over what has happened. But that hasn't fully stopped Team Trump, who still maintains child prisons in places like Homestead.
I'm more committed to this fight than ever. I'm not going to stop until every last child prison is closed, until families are reunited, and until people are held accountable for the children who have died.
I've said it before. And I'll keep saying it until this fight is won: for almost a century and a half, the Statue of Liberty has been a beacon to those fleeing oppression. Trump and the Republicans have taken America to a dark place. It's up to us to relight Lady Liberty’s torch and make America the place we know it can and should be.
