Meet Jeff Merkley

Photo of Jeff MerkleyJeff’s values were shaped as a working class kid from rural Oregon. The son of a sawmill worker, Jeff spent his early years in Myrtle Creek and Roseburg, Oregon, where his parents impressed upon him the importance of honest work, good schools, and strong families. When jobs in the timber industry became scarce, the family moved to east Multnomah County, and Jeff still lives in the same working class neighborhood, his kids going to the public high school he graduated from.

Jeff’s entire career has been animated by a simple philosophy that he learned from his parents: that each of us has a responsibility to make the community, the nation, and the planet a better place.

During his time in the Senate, Jeff’s primary focus has been restoring an economy that creates the kinds of opportunities that gave him a chance. He led the fight to put an end to the worst abuses on Wall Street, so Main Street doesn’t ever again get stuck with the bill for other people’s bad bets. Frustrated by the slow pace of assistance to homeowners facing foreclosure, Jeff put together a comprehensive plan to help underwater families refinance, his innovative solution gaining endorsements from prominent economists. He has written several laws to give small businesses new tools to find financing and has forcefully argued that Washington needs to put more priority on job growth.

Jeff has also been one of the Senate's top advocates of ending our dependence on foreign oil and speeding the transition to a clean-energy economy to create new jobs in new industries while tackling the existential threat of climate change. He has put out a comprehensive plan to end U.S. dependence on overseas oil within 20 years and wrote the leading bipartisan bill promoting electric vehicles.

Throughout his career, running non-profits, in the state legislature, and in the Senate, Jeff has been focused on finding common-sense solutions to solve problems and create opportunities. His bipartisan problem-solving as Oregon’s first Democratic Speaker in 16 years prompted The Oregonian to describe that session as "Oregon's most productive in a generation." That’s why he has been so aggravated by the dysfunction and paralysis in the U.S. Senate. Jeff has gained national prominence leading the fight to fix the broken Senate by ending the secret, silent filibuster that has been used to grind legislation and nominations to a halt.

Jeff and his wife, Mary, a nurse, have two children, Jonathan and Brynne, and an Airedale terrier, Sadie.
