Is this your American dream?

I grew up in a working-class neighborhood.

My folks taught me to work hard, play fair, and look out for others.

The American Dream wasn't some abstract idea. It was taking pride in your work and trying to better yourself. It was loving your family. It was caring for your community.

I loved Independence Day growing up. Family. Fireworks. Freedom.

Remembering where we came from. Affirming where we hope to go.

But there is a cloud hanging over today's July 4th, because even as we light up the BBQ to celebrate freedom, we know that Trump is locking up families fleeing persecution. There is absolutely no justification to deliberately inflict trauma on children as families wait to present their case for asylum.

I've seen the cages. I've spoken to parents separated from their children.

This is cruel and unusual, and is being done in our names as American citizens.

Each day that these horrors continue further darkens an already-terrible stain on our nation's integrity.

This isn't an abstract idea. These are real families in internment camps. Real people being made to suffer because of Donald Trump's cruelty and the Republican Party's inaction.

That's not my American Dream. Is it yours?

This fight is only just beginning.
