Let's talk about nurses

This National Nurses Day, let’s remind ourselves what we’re fighting for.

My wife, Mary, is a hospice nurse.

Day after day, she comes home with stories of patients struggling with illness, families pulling together, and individuals on powerful, spiritual life journeys.

She is coaching both patients and family caregivers, making the world a better place one bedside at a time.

Our nurses are an inspiration, putting a human touch on a health care system that can seem far too complicated and stressful.

That complexity, that stress, has a big impact on our quality of life. What is my coverage? Is my provider part of my new employer’s plan? Will the cost bankrupt my family? Do I even dare to go to the doctor to see if that pain is a serious problem?

Wouldn’t it be great to enable every American to have access to a simple, seamless plan where our loved ones will get the care they need when they are sick or injured just by living in America?

That’s why I introduced the Choose Medicare Act that gives every American not covered by Medicaid the ability to choose Medicare for their individual or group insurance.

On this National Nurses Day, let's once again thank our nurses for the vital role they play in caring for us all.

And let's also resolve to help build a better, more cost-effective, less stressful health care system.
