Time to Get Out the Vote!

Posted by Sarah Lane on November 1, 2008

The last eight years with the Bush Administration in power has been a disaster for our country. Our nation is mired in war in Iraq, thousands of soldiers have lost their lives, and thousands more are injured. Our economy is struggling and we've accumulated the largest national deficit and debt in the history our nation. We've failed to seriously invest in alternative forms of energy and create jobs here at home. Our moral standing in the world has been damaged by the use of torture and the abandonment of International treaties like the Geneva Convention. The unemployment rate is over 6% nationally, wages are stagnant and the American workweek is shortening. We've all felt powerless while Bush vetoed bills to provide health care for our children and while Republicans in Congress blocked efforts to strengthen workers' rights. Even when the Democrats took control of Congress back in 2006, our slim majority was not enough to overcome 94 filibusters by the Republicans, who were more interested in playing partisan games than moving our nation forward. We need to elect Barack Obama and strengthen our majorities in Congress if we want to see real change.

Now is not the time to be complacent. NOW IS THE TIME TO GOTV! We all have waited for so long for a new President, a new cabinet and more and better Democrats in Congress. This weekend, campaigns all across the country need your help. Barack Obama, congressional candidates like Jeff Merkley and local candidates need your voice, they need your energy and they need your passion.

Don't let a single phone go unused this weekend....

Calling all Oregonians!

Oregon Senate candidate Jeff Merkley needs your help to defeat Republican Gordon Smith. We have 10,000 volunteer shifts we need to fill in every corner of the state. Please consider making phonecalls, or hitting the streets to make sure we send an accomplished progressive leader to the Senate. Find out which Merkley office is closest to you here. With just four days left, our campaign released our closing ad, check it out...

Al Gore recently campaigned for Jeff Merkley in Oregon, and there was a moment in his speech that really stood out for me. Gore said:

Not too many years from now, our children will make an assessment and they'll look back on this first decade of the 21st century. When the turning point came and went....I want them to look back and ask how did they find the moral courage to rise and successfully solve a crisis, that so many said was impossible to solve. How did they connect the dots and see that the economic crisis, the debt crisis, the national security crisis and the climate crisis were all the same solution? How did they have the wisdom to do the right thing and safeguard the future? We've got everything we need to do exactly that except political will, but political will is a renewable resource.

The greatest risk is for things to stay the same

Please, do what you can this weekend to help elect more and better Democrats all across this country. If we elect more Democrats, we can finally end the war in Iraq. We can finally pass the Employee Free Choice Act. We can finally change our harmful energy policies. The time is finally here for....wait for it....

CHANGE!

Make it happen.

The past 3 or more Presidents have promised to make
sure every american young and old would have health care and its gotten pushed down further and further on the i promise to do list until it just gone the 3 or 400.00 we get back at the end of the year sure won't pay for health insurance for 1 month. Every one boo's Canada's health care system but it looks pretty good compared to no health care.

Ok, we now have a choice....Gordon Smith helped my family directly with issues related to mental illness and the awful social security administration.....Gordon made great strides in this arena and Jeff convinced me personally at the Benton County Fair that he would continue to carry this issue with him as well....our mental health system is broken, nationwide and in Oregon..we must move away from prison construction and towards prevention....now, we are watching and waiting for Oregon to finally get things together with help from the FEDS in the arena of mental illness and social services.
