Trump's cabinet picks are revealing

Donald Trump will stop at nothing to help his wealthy friends, even if that means throwing the rest of us under the bus.

Trump’s cabinet picks make this clear. To lead the greatest agencies in America, he’s chosen a gang of billionaires and cronies with a long track record of stiffing working families to pad their bottom line.

Yesterday, his pick for Secretary of Education – Betsy DeVos – was confirmed in the closest vote in Senate history. It seems her only qualification is that she’s a billionaire who has spent millions attacking public education.

And Trump’s not done.

For Secretary of Health and Human Services, Trump has chosen Congressman Tom Price. In Congress, Price has attacked women’s right to choose, the Affordable Care Act, and even threatened Medicare and Medicaid. Price has also quietly made investments in health care companies and then announced legislation to benefit them, raising profound conflict of interest questions.

Trump’s pick to head the Department of Treasury, former Goldman Sachs partner Steve Mnuchin, isn’t your average Wall Street lackey. As the CEO of OneWest Bank, Mnuchin was a foreclosure king, making millions off its misconduct. The bank's practices were so bad for consumers that one state banned it from foreclosing at all for a year.

And then there’s Labor Secretary nominee Andrew Puzder. The job is to stand up for workers, but Puzder’s record is one of opposing minimum wage increases, opposing overtime pay and sick leave policies, and fighting the Affordable Care Act. The very department he's supposed to lead found that restaurants in his chains routinely violate those labor laws by forcing workers to work off the clock, denying overtime pay, and providing unsafe working conditions.

Bottom line: Trump’s cabinet picks make clear that he thinks he can play working families for suckers. He talks about draining the swamp but actions speak far louder than words. He's treating the American people like the students at Trump University  as marks for his schemes to enrich himself and his millionaire friends. We deserve better.

In the Senate, I’m doing everything I can to hold Trump’s nominees accountable – and I’ll refuse to vote for any nominee who lacks the vision or qualifications to join the cabinet.

Let’s keep up the fight!
