New Merkley Ad: A Middle Class Story
Positive Ad Focuses on Merkley's Background, Plans to Cut Taxes, Create Jobs, Reform Health Care
The newest ad from Jeff Merkley's campaign focuses on Merkley's middle class background and his plans to cut taxes, create jobs and make health care more affordable for families and businesses. The son of a millworker and the first in his family to attend college, Jeff Merkley understands why so many families feel like Washington has left them behind.
Born in the timber town of Myrtle Creek, Jeff Merkley spent his early years in Roseburg and earned scholarships to become the first in his family to go to college. Merkley went on to serve as a national security analyst, first for the Pentagon and then for Congress. After returning to Oregon with his wife Mary, a registered nurse, Merkley led Habitat for Humanity and worked with low-income families to rebuild neighborhoods and purchase their first home.
Jeff Merkley has traveled to 100 towns across Oregon, beginning in Myrtle Creek. In every town he has heard from middle class families just like his who are struggling in this economy.
During his campaign he has released plans to:
* Cut taxes for 95 percent of working families and provide additional tax cuts to help families care for their children, care for their seniors, send their child to college, and purchase their first home;
* Create good-paying jobs by investing in infrastructure, ending tax and trade policies that ship jobs overseas, and seizing Oregon's potential to produce renewable energy and green-collar jobs; and
* Provide universal health care to every man, woman, and child, helping Oregon businesses compete again.
In Oregon, Jeff Merkley balanced the budget, established the rainy day fund, and cut taxes for working people. More about Merkley's economic plans can be found at his web site, www.jeffmerkley.com.

Male Voice Over:
It's a middle class story.
Jeff Merkley:
Growing up in a mill town and first in my family to attend college,
It's not surprise to me why so many Oregon families feel that Washington has left us behind.
Male Voice Over:
It is why Jeff Merkley has a plan...
To cut taxes for the middle class,
Bring back good-paying jobs,
And finally reform health care so Oregon families and businesses can compete again.
Jeff Merkley:
I'm Jeff Merkley and I approve this message,
Because it is time to deliver the change Washington politicians only talk about.
