Jeff TV - The Issues: Education

Jeff Merkley knows firsthand the value of a good education. From an early age, his parents instilled in him a commitment to learning and a passion for ideas. As a child, when Jeff's father would drive him to school, he would point to the doorway of the elementary school and say, "Those doors are the doors to opportunity. Study hard and you can pursue any dream." Jeff studied hard, earned scholarships, and became the first in his family to go to college.

Jeff was lucky, but he knows not everyone is. All Oregonians deserve the same opportunity to study hard and receive an excellent education. Education is the key to a good job and a higher standard of living.

As Oregon’s next U.S. Senator, Jeff Merkley will work to:

- Keep promises to our children by fully funding public schools

- Completely overhaul No Child Left Behind

- Give young children a fair chance by fully funding Head Start programs

- Provide opportunities for high school students: a college education must be affordable

- Provide children with the health care they need: healthy children learn better
