New Merkley Ad: No Blank Check for Wall Street
Ad Fourth in Series Highlighting Merkley's Plans on the Economy
Senate candidate Jeff Merkley released a new ad today about the troubling state of the economy and the need for new leadership in Washington D.C. While Gordon Smith sided with George Bush - supporting the Bush agenda 90 percent of the time - Jeff Merkley has fought for families in Oregon and will fight to restore accountability and protect taxpayers in Washington D.C.
Watch the new ad, Decade:
"Throughout my career, I have fought the special interests who try to undermine our economy and our families," said Jeff Merkley. "Now those same special interests are asking for a blank check from American taxpayers to clean up the mess they made. Under Bush and Smith, there is no accountability in Washington or on Wall Street and that must change. There should be no blank check for George Bush and no blank check for Wall Street."
While Gordon Smith sides with George Bush to roll back accountability and give tax breaks to billionaires that ship jobs overseas, Jeff Merkley took on payday lenders, eliminated golden parachutes, and will refuse a Wall Street bailout unless CEO pay checks are cut and middle class taxpayers are protected.
Merkley has a long record of fighting for consumers by helping rid our state of payday lenders, check cashing fees and other financial scams and ending golden parachutes for school administrators. [HB 2871, 2007; SB 384, 2007]
While Gordon Smith will not take a position on the Bush Administration's three page plan to bailout Wall Street with $1 trillion, Merkley opposes more blank checks for George Bush, demanding protections for consumers, caps on compensation for corporate executives and renewed accountability for the financial markets. [The Oregonian, 9/22/08]
"Smith gave Bush a blank check for Iraq and he is considering another for Wall Street," said Jeff Merkley.

In this economy, who's really on your side?
Gordon Smith and Washington - a decade of no accountability
Tax breaks for billionaires, shipping our jobs overseas.
And now, a trillion dollar blank check for Wall Street.
For us, there's Jeff Merkley.
Took on the payday lenders, cut golden parachutes.
And Merkley says no bailouts until CEO bonuses are cut.
And middle class taxpayers are protected.
Finally, a senator on your side.
