U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) was endorsed by the Asian American Action Fund Wednesday.

The group, which is a political action organization dedicated to empowering Asian and Pacific Americans, of which there are 13 million in the U.S., said that Merkley’s experience working as a national security analyst in Washington D.C. and as Oregon’s Speaker of the House appealed to them. But his ability to work with presidential candidate Barack Obama (D-Ill.) sealed the deal.

“Barack Obama is running an historic campaign, but to bring real change to Washington, he’ll need a working majority in the U.S. Senate,” Asian American Action Fund Executive Director Guatam Dutta said. “Jeff Merkley is a progressive leader who will work for Asian-Pacific Americans and make waves in Washington on health care, job creation, and civil rights. Jeff brings to the table a unique combination of community-building experience, foreign policy knowledge, and a determination to get things done.”

U.S. Rep. David Wu (D-Portland), the first Taiwanese-American elected to Congress, serves as a member of the AAA-Fund’s honorary board.
