Smith Again Cancels Out Wyden, Votes to Keep Troops In Iraq

PORTLAND—Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, expressed his disappointment today with Gordon Smith’s latest vote against cloture for the Feingold Amendment, which is a responsible plan to redeploy American combat troops from Iraq.

Smith continues to express his desire to end the war, but continues to vote against proposals like the Feingold Amendment which would do just that. The amendment failed on a 24-71 vote
:

“It is becoming very clear to Oregonians that Gordon Smith does not support ending the American involvement in Iraq. Despite what he says on television and in the newspapers, he has consistently refused to support legislation to responsibly redeploy our troops.

“And it is becoming very clear to Oregonians that Senator Ron Wyden does not have a partner in Gordon Smith on the most critical issues of our day. Today he again cancelled out Wyden’s vote for this important plan to end the war and bring our sons and daughters home.”
