Mayors, Local Officials Support Merkley for U.S. Senate

PORTLAND—Jeff Merkley, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, announced the support for his candidacy of two additional Oregon mayors today. Mayor James Bernard of Milwaukie and Mayor Pat Sherman of Brookings bring the total to 12 mayors who are supporting Merkley’s bid for U.S. Senate.

“Jeff has been a champion for Oregon values his whole career,”
said Mayor Bernard. “I’m proud to support him because he has proven he knows how to bring people together and get things done. We need that now more than ever.”

“There is no one better than Jeff to represent Oregon in the U.S. Senate,” said Mayor Sherman. “He understands the challenges working families and rural Oregonians face because that’s where he came from. He has stayed true to his roots, and that’s what we need in a U.S. Senator.”

In addition to Mayors Bernard and Sherman, Merkley also has the support of Mayors Bruce Abernethy of Bend, Judy Hammerstad of Lake Oswego, Lori Hollingsworth of Lincoln City, Norm King of West Linn, Charlotte Lehan of Wilsonville, John Morrison of Ashland, Alice Norris of Oregon City, Kitty Piercy of Eugene, Tom Potter of Portland and Charles Tomlinson of Corvallis.

Merkley, whose campaign is co-chaired by Governor Ted Kulongoski and former Governor Barbara Roberts, has the support of every statewide officer. The campaign is gaining support from local elected officials across the state.

Thirty state representatives and 11 state senators have endorsed Merkley, as well as eight county commissioners, city council members and school board members. Merkley also has the backing of retired Air Force General Tony McPeak, former Army Green Beret Jim Rassmann and Paul Evans of the Oregon National Guard, who are heading up the “Veterans for Merkley” effort.

Merkley is also supported by three labor organizations that together represent more than 40,000 working men and women in Oregon. The UFCW Local 555, ILWU, and Oregon AFSCME Council 75 have all thrown their early support to Merkley, who has been a champion of workers’ rights in the state legislature.
