Rep. Deborah Boone Announces Support for Speaker Jeff Merkley for U.S. Senate
CANNON BEACH -- State Rep. Deborah Boone (D-Cannon Beach) announced today that she will support Democrat Jeff Merkley for U.S. Senate. Boone is a second-term state representative and a former Clatsop County Commissioner.
"Jeff has an unmatched ability to bring together Democrats and Republicans – liberals, conservatives and everyone in between – to make a real difference in then lives of Oregonians," Boone said. "He is dedicated to making Oregon a better place to live and work, and he has demonstrated the kind of leadership Oregon needs in the U.S. Senate."
"Because of Jeff's leadership, the legislature had the most productive session in three decades," Boone said. "We put more state troopers on Oregon roads for the first time in sixteen years and we reinvested in public education. Those are no small accomplishments, and they wouldn't have been possible without Jeff leading the way."
In April, Smith released a list of Democrats, including Boone that he said would support his re-election bid. But after Merkley entered the race, she said that she would support him as a fellow Democrat, colleague and Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives.
Boone said she informed the Smith campaign this week that she could not support his re-election.
